3D Secure - Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode
What is 3D Secure?
3D Secure is a new technical standard developed by Visa and MasterCard to further secure CNP (Cardholder Not Present) transactions over the Internet. MasterCard brand their system as MasterCard SecureCode and Visa call their's Verified by Visa.
It requires the cardholder to provide a personal password or pin number when paying for goods online with their credit card just as they would provide a pin on the high street. This ensures that the shopper is who they say they are when providing card details to an online shop. Cardholders are reassured that when they sign up their card is protected from fraudulent use on the internet.
Will I be prompted for this code if I products from this website?
Yes - HSBC has incorporated the Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode technology into their Secure Payment Gateway. The sub-page presented is actually from your own Visa or MasterCard issuing bank and not HSBC, but it is incorporated into the payment process.
At present you do not have to complete this information because 3D Secure is still optional for customers, however we understand that Visa & MasterCard intend to make this extra layer of security mandatory in the near future. It is now mandatory for certain suppliers to offer the facility however.
How does 3D Secure work?
Once you've registered and created your own private security code, you will be automatically prompted by your card issuer to type in your security code each time you make a purchase at participating online stores/retailers. Then your security code will be quickly confirmed by your card issuer to complete your purchase. Your security code will never be shared with the store/retailer and using it is as easy as entering your PIN at an ATM.
Will this affect the checkout process?
Yes - assuming you request it (it's still optional remember!) In a 3D Secure transaction, you must register for Verified by Visa (VbV) or MasterCard SecureCode (MSC) with your issuing bank. If you have not already done so, when you place an order, you will be asked to register your card before continuing with the transaction. The transaction process is as follows:
You complete your order and add products to the shopping basket as usual.
At the checkout stage on our website, if you select to pay via the HSBC Secure Payment Gateway option, then as part of the payment process with HSBC, you will be re-directed to your own issuing bank where you will need to enter your password and then returned to HSBC and eventually to our own website.
If you have not created a password you will have the option to do so at this point. The bank will verify the password and the transaction will continue as normal.
If you have chosen not to use 3D secure with your own bank, this section will not apply.
How does 3D Secure protect me?
Correctly entering your security code during a purchase at a participating online store/retailer, confirms that you are the authorised cardholder. If an incorrect security code is entered, the purchase will not be completed. Even if someone knows your credit or debit card number, the purchase cannot be completed without your security at a participating store/retailer.
